The Longswamp State Highway 1 (SH1) project was a key road upgrade in the Waikato region, aimed at improving safety, traffic flow, and travel reliability on the key Auckland-to-Hamilton corridor. Completed in 2020, the project upgraded a 5.9-kilometer section of SH1 between Hampton Downs and the Mercer interchange, widening it to four lanes and introducing median and roadside barriers to enhance safety.

The project also included upgraded local road connections, improved intersections, and better access for pedestrians and cyclists. Extensive landscaping including 220,000+ native plants and trees. Stormwater management measures were implemented to protect the surrounding environment. These improvements have contributed to a safer and more efficient SH1, supporting both regional and national transport networks.
