Peka Peka to
Otaki Project
The Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway is a major infrastructure project in New Zealand, designed to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance travel efficiency on State Highway 1. Completed in December 2022, the 13-kilometer, four-lane expressway extends the Kapiti Expressway from Peka Peka to north of Ōtaki, providing a safer and more reliable route for motorists.
The project includes new interchanges at Ōtaki and Te Horo, upgraded local road connections, and improved access for pedestrians and cyclists. Extensive landscaping and environmental restoration have also been undertaken, featuring 900,000+ native plants and trees, wetland protection, and habitat enhancements to support local biodiversity.. These developments contribute to a more resilient and well-connected transport corridor for the lower North Island.
